Meehan on IRS Breach: "Intrusions are Unacceptable"

Press Release

Date: May 27, 2015
Location: Springfield, PA

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight, this morning issued the following statement in the wake of the Internal Revenue Service's disclosure that the personal information of more than 100,000 American taxpayers was compromised in an apparent data breach:

"The IRS data breach is another example of the sophisticated and growing capacities of cyber criminals," Meehan said. "Tax returns -- with all the personal data they contain -- are a tempting target for thieves. Online services designed for convenience and ease of use by the consumer may well be exploited by hackers. With millions of Americans' identities at risk, intrusions are unacceptable."

"I will be working closely with Ways and Means Committee Chairman Ryan, Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Roskam and my colleagues on the committee to get answers," Meehan said.

In the 113th Congress, Meehan chaired the House Homeland Security Committee's Cybersecurity Subcommittee, and led the effort to pass the first significant cyber legislation signed into law in a decade. At the start of the current Congress, Meehan joined the House Ways and Means Committee, the House's chief tax-writing panel with oversight jurisdiction of the Internal Revenue Service.
